Weight LossAt energize we use Optifast as the preferred meal replacement therapy. Optifast was able to meet all of the recommended dietary intakes for women when replacing two meals a day. Cutting down on sugar is an important step in healthy eating and many of the meal replacements tested contained more than 50% sugar. Optifast contains less than half the sugar content of most meal replacements. Just check the label when you are making up your shake. High quality protein is an extremely important part of the meal replacement. Optifast has been designed with a high quality protein that is necessary to maintain our body’s lean muscle tissue. The high levels of casein are thought to help reduce muscle wasting and there is some evidence that this slow acting protein may help reduce hunger. The extra calcium in Optifast is also beneficial, some recent studies have indicated that dietary calcium is an important ingredient in weight loss and people that include less than 400mg of calcium a day are less likely to lose weight. Typically the level of weight loss expected using meal replacement therapy ranges from 1.5 to 2kg a week. I have personally been using meal replacement therapy in my practice for the past three years with great results, but meal replacement is only one piece of the puzzle in our success. Measuring fluid change is extremely important when looking at the success of a program. It is very easy to gain 1 or 2kg in fluid and not notice any changes on the scales, however with BIA body composition analysis we can see shifts in fat, muscle and fluid. The meal replacement isn’t meant to keep you locked into using a milkshake for breakfast lunch and dinner for the rest of your life. We want you to learn how to eat well and typically the meal replacement phase is only short term so we can get you moving toward better eating habits. We also have a range healthy cook books, pedometers and other products to help improve your health and lifestyle. At Energize we work with your doctor to help you achieve your health and weight loss goals. We provide detailed reports to your doctor indicating your progress and any other tests you might need as part of your program, including blood glucose and cholesterol.
