Having a total cholesterol above 5.5mmol/L is associated with an increase risk of heart disease and if you have diabetes or pre-existing heart disease a total choleseterol should be less than 4.0mmol/L. LDL Cholesterol is often referred to as ‘Bad Cholesterol’ and is associated with blockage to our blood vessels. Your LDL should be less than 2.0mmol/L HDL Cholesterol is referred to as the ‘Good Cholesterol’ as it helps to reduce the blockages in our blood vessels and protect us from heart disease. This should be more than 1.0mmol/L It is important to talk to your nutritionist about your cholesterol as some people who have a low HDL my need a different diet approach. Everyone is different so it important you have your diet tailor made to suit you. |
