Creating a healthy lifestyle has never been so easy.

Why men should have Soy

Before you start telling me soy milk is only for vegetarians and women who use blue hair rinse, think about some of the benefits soy products have for men. We know that soy foods contain phytoestrogens or the plant’s equivalent to a hormone in our body called oestrogen.

For most men, when you hear the word ‘prostate’ you may think about an uncomfortable appointment with your local GP. The good news is that phytoestrogens which are found in soy products may reduce your risk of prostate cancer. The isoflavone called genistein has been linked in a number of studies to help reduce the rates of prostate cancer in men.

Prostate cancer is the leading type of cancer and kills approximately 2600 men each year, as many women who die from breast cancer The genistein helps to reduce cancer by reducing the level of PSA or prostate specific antigen. It has also been though that genistein may help to kill off some of the cancerous cells which promote the cancer growth.

Soy products have some antioxidants which can also protect our heart. The type of fat found in soy products is also good for reducing LDL or “Bad” cholesterol which contributes to heart disease. Considering most men in Australia die from heart disease, it may be an important step in preventing heart disease.

Now that you know how good soy products are good for blokes, how do you go about including soy foods?

I find that using soy and linseed bread is an easy way to start including soy and it tastes great. You might like to try a soy smoothie, I would normally suggest a banana smoothie, but with the price of bananas at the moment it’s not the cheapest option. Soy smoothies taste fantastic, try banana & honey with a little wheatgerm.

Another option is to use Soy beans in cooking. I find that adding some soy beans to a bolognaise sauce is an easy way to include them in your diet. If he is particularly adventurous you might like to try some tofu in stir-fry, but for the average guy I don’t fancy your chances with Tofu. Including variety is important for ensuring we keep our body as healthy as possible. Soy foods should be part of your healthy eating picture. If you can find ways to add soy foods it may just prevent prostate cancer or heart disease, adding some extra years to your life.
