Creating a healthy lifestyle has never been so easy.

Eat Like A Caveman

Can you see yourself eating like a caveman?

Researchers from University of California have some good news that can achieve dramatic improvements to your health. Eating as people did hundreds of years ago may be the answer, however is the information any different to what we’ve already heard before? Our bodies are no different to that of the cavemen, although our food is very different.

As I mentioned in my last blog, processed food requires less energy in digestion and causes weight gain. Humans had a remarkably different lifestyle and diet 1000 years ago. We had to hunt for food, pound grains and vegetables by hand to make them edible. It was difficult for them to find food, let alone be able to eat it. The effort it took to produce food and eat it was extreme.

Today food is available at any time and almost any location. You can get whatever food you want 24 hours a day. Mc Donalds is available 24/7 and the food is high in salt, fat, and sugar with little fibre and phytonutrients. To test the impact eating like a caveman would have on the health of selected unhealthy people; researches at the University of California put them on a caveman diet. The diet was high in protein, fruit and veg, with relatively unprocessed nuts and seeds.

The people in the study who were overweight, had high blood sugar, high blood pressure and high cholesterol or triglyceride all improved. There was a significant drop in blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol.

Currently I am completing my Master of Pharmacy and we’ve just finished studying drugs for heart disease. These medications all have side effects, including muscle and joint pain, amongst others, and in rare cases cause quite serious health problems. To achieve such dramatic improvements in the health of people without drugs is encouraging.

According to one of the Doctors in the study, the reduction in cholesterol was as good as what is achieved by taking medication. The added bonus is that the risk of cancer and other serious disease such as sleep apnoea, amongst other health problems can be reduced by a change in the way we eat.

Eating like a Caveman can produce dramatic improvements to your health. It is not for everyone and it can be difficult to make the time to eat well. We are all faced with a decision to choose a healthy option, or go for processed food that is quick and easy. I would encourage to take the time and think about your health in 30 years time and get some fruit, yoghurt and nuts instead.
