Red wine is good for us isn’t it?
A new study has demonstrated a benefit in metabolism from a resveratrol which is found in red wine. Obese men were given a small dose of resveratrol daily for a month and their metabolism improved. The benefits seen in the metabolism was as good as results shown in low calorie diets.
“We saw a lot of small effects, but consistently pointing in a good direction of improved metabolic health," said Patrick Schrauwen of Maastricht University in The Netherlands.
Insulin resistance is thought to be the main mechanism by which resveratrol improves health. When insulin levels increase, it can indicate the early stages of diabetes and is associated with a number of health problems. Studies in animals have shown that resveratrol can help to improve insulin resistance and protect from some of the negative effects of a high fat diet. When given resveratrol there was less fat stored in the liver, which is an indication of insulin resistance. There was also a noticable reduction in blood pressure and blood sugar. They also measured improvements in the way muscles burn fat.
